Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME generic TLD is the single TLD planned for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to reserve john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken 3rd-level domains remained operational.
